Tools & Tips: The Family Mission Statement

I've been thinking a lot lately about the power of intention -- of making clear statements about our intended and desired future. For your family, there's no better way to do this than to create a family mission statement.

The family mission statement is a concept put forth by Dr. Stephen Covey and contains some of the following types of questions. These questions are taken from the family mission statement website. On there you can fill in these questions and it will create a written statement for you to display.

1. We are at our best when…

2. We are at our worse when…

3. What do we really love to do together?

4. As a couple, how can we better help each other?

5. What/how can we contribute to others outside our family?

6. Are there things we should be doing or changing as a couple?

7. What are the principles we want to operate on (e.g. trust, kindness, honesty, service)?

8. In ten years, where do we each want to be or have accomplished?

Wouldn't this be a powerful message to display to your kids and to those who come into your home?

Book Recommendations!!

Recently I dusted off some old books I have by author Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen entitled, "Kitchen Table Wisdom" and "My Grandfather's Blessings." In these books are Dr. Remen's stories of wisdom and healing from her years as a doctor working with cancer patients. I read them 10 years ago and I think only recently, as I grow just a little wiser, am I understanding her lessons. She is an extraordinary healer and the wisdom she shares touches deep. I highly recommend these books for inspiration, self exploration and growth.
