What Happens at Marriage Counseling?

Wondering what happens at marriage counseling? Here are some frequently asked questions about marriage counseling:

1. What is the first thing I should be looking for in a marriage counselor?

You'll know within the first 5 minutes of talking with a therapist if the connection is right (i.e. do you want to keep on talking or quickly get off the phone?). Take the time to do the initial phone consultation, look at their website, ask a friend, and find out what happens in marriage counseling with this particular marriage counselor. Research indicates the SINGLE most important factor in producing growth/change is the relationship between marriage counselors and client. But you should also look at specialty areas, experience and background to see if it matches what you need.

2. What are your fees?

My fee is a very competitive rate for the Denver area at $95 per 1 hour session and $140 for 90 minutes. I also have package deals if you want to pay in advance for sessions. Sessions may be used at any time in the future for any services offered but any unused sessions will not be subject to refund. Packages include: 5 One hour sessions for $400 ($75 savings!) and 10 One hour sessions for $750 ($200 savings!).

3. Do you accept insurance, EAP, or other third party payer sources?

No, at this time I do not accept any insurance for new clients.

4. What is your location and hours of operation?

My office is near I-25 and Colorado Boulevard located at 4155 E. Jewell Ave., Ste. 703, Denver, CO 80222. It's the big white building with the balconies and behind the Petco. The office is on the north side of the I-25 exit. Take Mexico street East one block to Bellaire street. Turn right on Bellaire and then right on Jewell. Map Location

I offer marriage counseling, relationship counseling and individual counseling sessions during normal business hours and into evening hours up to approximately 7p.m. On a case by case basis, I can arrange for Saturday morning sessions.

5. What happens at marriage counseling during the first visit?

I will ask you to fill out a detailed intake form and sign a consent form for treatment. I will likely ask you questions that go beyond your stated problem area to help assess and rule out any major mental health issues. I will help you identify which areas you would like to work on and begin to form some goals to achieve. It will be your chance to ask questions about what happens at marriage counseling and share more in depth about why you're seeking help. Yes, I have a couch but you're not required to lie down on it!

6. What type of therapy do you practice? Are there issues you do not treat?

For marriage counseling and relationship counseling, I use an interpersonal, relationship and emotion focused approach that helps you deepen your insight as well as make behavior changes. For individual counseling, I use a blend of humanistic, experiential and cognitive behavioral techniques.

I am happy to provide referrals for substance abuse counseling, severe eating disorders, active domestic violence, and to those who are currently suicidal and need crisis assistance. I do not provide emergency, after-hours coverage unless it is arranged between therapist and client.
